SpamAssassin

At NameHog we only use the best methods of spam protection to save you from countless hours of going through each email checking to see if it is spam or not!

All of our web servers are running the latest version of SpamAssassin. If you contineue to read this page you will understand how the software works to your advantage and how by using it we can almost guarantee that you have no spam in your email. The software can be enabled or disabled from within your control panel, so you do have the option to receive all the junk if you wish. Some people chose to have all the emails if they have their own exchange server in an office with spam software on it.

Trusted: SpamAssassin's anti-spam engine, was designed to protect your message while taking care of spam, viruses and other email threats. SpamAssassin won the Best Of Open Source Software " BOSSIE Award, as the winner in the anti-spam category for 2007!

Effective: SpamAssassin has a proven track record of killing spam. We have never seen the software remove a good email, anyone that uses the software will most likely tell you the same! The real benefit with SpamAssassin is the false positive rates of less than 1 in 1 million. Some customers have seen only one false positive in over 7 years of service which is fantastic!

Easy to Use: SpamAssassin is a 'simple' system meaning that end users are not spending time managing the system for rule creation. Clcik on enable, and thats it, job done!

Affordable: Yes, unlike other hosts, we dont actually charge for Spam Protection, we give it away from with every account, even the £10 p.a mail account! We do not believe in charging for vital software!

How are spam scores assigned?
In SpamAssassin, the scores are assigned using a neural network trained with error back propagation (Perceptron). The system attempts to optimise the efficiency of the rules that are run in terms of minimizing the number of false positives and false negatives.

Some DNS blacklist rules are distributed with scores of 0. These generally request or require payment, and as such are disabled by default. Feel free to enable the lookups, if you've paid for them. You can add DNS black lists into the settings found in the control panel. A score of 0 will stop a rule from being run.

Does SpamAssassin filter email-borne viruses as well as spam?
No. SpamAssassin is focussed on identifying spam, and not viruses. The mechanism of scanning for viruses is different, and software tailored for virus scanning is much much better at this task. There is a third-party plugin for SpamAssassin called ClamAV and add a score based upon its result.
